Renewable energy might seem like something right out of a science fiction novel, and it used to be the entry point to generate it for your own personal use was too high for the average person. However, with new technologies and falling prices, you can now enjoy the benefits of renewable energy for your home.
There are many reasons why you should consider renewable energy as a power source for your home, the most important being evident in the name, it's renewable. This simply means that the source of energy used is always replenished. Some of the more common sources are the sun, wind and geothermal energy. The sun for example, can produce energy to a solar panel that is then stored for current or future use. The sun is a natural source of energy that will not be going anywhere for a long time. We need to leverage this powerful source!
Another reason that you might consider renewable energy for your home is that you will reduce your reliance on nonrenewable sources, such as fossil fuels. By doing this, you are doing a huge favor to our environment. Not only are these not replenished when they are used, but they are also very dangerous to our atmosphere as many produce CO2 (carbon dioxide) which is considered a leading cause of global warming. The cost we are paying through the continuous use of these sources of energy is going to be far greater within the next 20-30 years if we are not proactive in our efforts to end our dependencies on fossil fuels.
Speaking of cost, the cost for renewable energy for your home is much less today than it was even 10 years ago. It used to be you would have to pay thousands of dollars to have solar panels installed, but now for as little as $200 you can take on this project on your own. Once you have your solar panel or wind generator in place, you'll also start to see your monthly utility bill go down. Now who doesn't like the sound of that? Also, some government entities may offer tax rebates for the installation and use of solar panel power (be sure to check with your local or federal government for details).
What it comes down to is this, there is no reason any longer that we should be tied to the hip of the utilities companies for there power. We need to step up as a society and make it a priority to continue to research and invest in renewable energy sources. The longer we put it off, the more we are hampering future generations, and depriving them of a beautiful, clean earth.
