Joyous moments occur every day. We must not wait for holidays, birthdays and special occasions. We live stressful and very busy lives. In a rush to do, be and acquire, inadvertently, have lost the spontaneous joyous moments that would naturally occur if we were not attending activities with children or engaged in business commitments or a million other things that fill our days. We must purposely plan for and schedule in the time for things that are important for our well being.
I came up with some ideas to challenge you and your family for this month. I dare you to try them. You will surely face some resistance but be strong and know that each of these will enrich your life.
Turn off the electronics - Can you do it? For one weekend day try turning off all the electronics in the house. No cell phones, computer, television, or video games. Plan some fun activities and get everyone involved. Take a walk, play a game, listen to music, read, let everyone plan the meal and make a special dinner. No complaining allowed! At the end of the day discuss how it affected you. You may realize the effect of a life filled with multi-tasking and constant stimulation has on your well being and choose to do this once a month.
Secret helper. Do a secret good deed. There are so many opportunities each day to do something nice for each other and what better way than to leave someone wondering who it was that touched their heart. Do you know someone who is having a difficult time making ends meet? Purchase a small gift card the next time you are in the grocery store and mail it with no return address. Love to scrapbook and craft make a few birthday cards and drop them off at a nursing home - ask that they be given to someone who has no family. Don't normally cut coupons - spend one month cutting coupons and take the money saved and buy a toy for toys for tots or donate the money to feed the less fortunate. You see, if all can do little things to brighten the world the cumulative effect can brighten the lives of so many others and enrich our life as well.
Revisit the past. When was the last time you went through old family photos. Pull out that stack of old pictures and look through them. Nothing lightens your heart and mood more than looking at our prior fashion sense and hair styles. Pick out some special pictures to put aside and bring them out at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Make copies and send in a note to let loved ones know you are thinking of them and remember all the wonderful times you have shared. Another creative idea is to use the picture for your place card at the holidays or make a copy and include with your holiday card.
