Courier Jobs - How to Choose an Accountant

In my last article I briefly explained why a courier jobs business would benefit from an accountant. I am now going to give you a few tips on how to find an accountant suitable for your business.

The ideal situation is you find an accountant before you actually need one. This will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

Before you approach anybody make a list of what services you require for your business. Make note of your strengths and weaknesses in this area and also your time restraints. This will help you have an informative and productive meeting. You will also be able to specify exactly what you need as opposed to what they think you might need.

Ask people you know if they can recommend anybody - usually the best services are found by word of mouth.

Draw up a provisional list (this should include your needs, the amount you are able to afford and their reputation and qualifications).

Take into account the type of company you are going to form - will you be a sole trader, a partnership or a limited company. Depending on the type of company and any existing skills you may have you might only need a book-keeper.

Another point to bear in mind that quite a few people do not think about is does the firm have professional indemnity insurance. This will enable you to claim for any financial loss if there are any problems later on down the line.

Take a good, hard look at their charges and do not commit to anything until you have built these into your business plan and cashflow etc.

Also find out who will be responsible for your accounts - quite a number of larger firms will delegate the work. This can cause a problem if you need to form a working relationship especially earlier on in the business. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to see or chat too the person dealing with your account.

Will they be able to offer you any other additional services or advice?

It is also very important to quantify whether or not they will remind you when your accounts need submitting and send you any changes to the tax laws.

Remember preparation is the key here and if you have decided what you think you need and can afford when you do have your meeting you will have a better idea if the firm is suitable for you.
