Who wouldn't like to save money when they go grocery shopping? The good news is, it's not as hard as you may think. It's heard some people say that clipping coupons takes time. Personally, I think it's worth my time to save the amount of money I do. Also, keep in mind that like everything, the more you do it the easier it becomes. After a while you'll work out a system that is right for you and it will become less and less time consuming.
Here are five tips to get you started using coupons.
1. The first thing you'll need to do is find coupons. Check your local Sunday newspaper for inserts. Not every newspaper has them, so take a peek inside before you buy. Once you find a newspaper that carries inserts, buy a copy each week. You might want to buy several copies so you have multiples of each coupon. (More about that later.) Coupons inserts are usually not available on the holidays, so avoid wasting your money of the newspaper that week. You can also print coupons out from the internet. This is a great way to pick and choose what you want. There are some resources for printable coupons listed below.
2. Now that you have your coupons, organize them in whatever way will be easier for you to keep track of them. You might try organizing them by expiration date or group them together by food type. You may change your method several times before you find one that suits you best.
3. The next time you go food shopping, take a look at the weekly store flyer first. Either pick one up at the store or check their website. Look it over for anything you need that might be on sale and make a note of it. Now check if you have any coupons for those products. Matching coupons to sale items can save you a great deal of money, especially when you do it on a regular basis. If you have more than one coupon for a sale item, use them. Do this only when you can be sure the items will be used before they expire or you can freeze them.
4. Repeat #3 for items that you don't need right now, but that you can stock up on. If you repeat this for just a few items each week (or month) you'll lessen the amount of items you buy at full price. This works great with canned goods, items that have long shelf lives or can be frozen.
Saving money doesn't have to be time consuming. Once you start a routine, it becomes easier and when you see the savings roll in, you'll wonder why you didn't start earlier.
