Cost of Website Creation - Can it Be Done For Free?

Expert Author Norm Pavelka

When you start out with Internet Marketing or building a web business, one of the first requirements will most likely be a website. If you have a limited budget the immediate concern will be the cost and can it be done for free? Well it can not be totally free, but the cost need not be large. If you compare it with starting an off-line business then the cost of a web business can be minimal.

What Are The Compulsory Costs?

The first cost you encounter is buying a domain name. This you will purchase from a Domain Registrar such as Godaddy. You will submit your chosen name for your site to see if it is available. Since the name for each site must be unique it is necessary to check that the name you have chosen is not already in use. If it is available that is fine and you go ahead and purchase it. If it is already taken then try variations of your original choice until you are successful. The cost of a domain name will be just over $10 for a '.com' name. Others such as '.info' are about $2 because they are not so popular; the reason being, someone typing in the name of a site is more likely to type in.com rather than some other ending.

The next cost is hosting. All domains have to be hosted on the internet and many companies provide this service. Some Registrars provide this service in addition to selling the domain name, but it is more usual to have your domain hosted on a separate site. Hosting costs from $5 to about $10 per month. If you belong to a membership site which provides free hosting you are in luck as that is in effect a discount on your membership fee. There is free hosting available on the internet. Some are quite reliable, but if it is important that your site should not have any downtime or has sufficient capacity then you should assess them carefully. In most situations, if reliability is important to you then it is well worth paying the small monthly fee.

One further item you require is a Web Editor. This piece of software converts plain text, pictures and tables to computer language ready to be uploaded to your host site. You can purchase editors such as Dreamweaver which is very popular or there are available satisfactory free ones to download from the internet. Kompoza is a good free editor which even advanced marketers use.

Those three items comprise your basic components to set up a website and unless you require an elaborate site for commercial purposes and plan to have it professionally designed that is all you will need to spend.

Autoresponder. If you plan to create a web business and will be building an opt-in list from your visitors then an Autoresponder such as AWeber is a necessity. The cost for an Autoresponder is approximately $19 per month. Free autoresponders are available on the internet, but treat them with caution. Free auto responders and free hosting will usually require you to allow the suppliers to place ads on your site or on the emails your autoresponder sends out. For a serious business you need your Autoresponder to be very reliable as it in effect the focal point of your business.

You can in fact create a website for free and for many applications they will be satisfactory. However if you intend to build a sound business on the internet, it would not be good practice to risk its success for the sake of the small cost of website creation
