Cornhole is a game similar in play to horseshoes. The biggest difference being it is played with two boards or platforms that have a six inch hole cut in the top third of the board. Each player or team gets four bean bags or corn bags with which they throw and score points. The game sounds simple enough and it really is. But, the hours of enjoyment for adults and kids alike is what is making this game so popular all over the country.

The history of the game of cornhole is not clear. Although, there is very little denying that the games recent rise in popularity started in the West side of Cincinnati, Ohio sometime around 1999 or 2000. The game has gradually spread out from it's midwestern origins and has recently become popular not only in the U.S. but oversees in places like the U.K. as well. The reason is simple. It's safe, fun, affordable, easy, and yet challenging all at the same time.

During the early days of the game there were no manufacturers or stores for players to purchase game sets and bags. Players were left to build their own cornhole games out of two by fours, plywood, corn, and duck cloth. Often these boards were decorated with the players favorite sports team logos. All hand painted. As the game increased in popularity some crafty and business minded individuals began building sets in their garages and barns and began selling them straight out of their yards and sometimes at area flea markets and festivals. Today, there are dozens of online stores and even corner retail stores selling their own versions of this now classic game.

One has to spend very little time playing this backyard, family friendly game to become addicted. For the competitive player there are now tournaments all over the midwest and even cornhole championships for the best of the best. The boards can still be hand built if you are crafty and enjoy building things from scratch, but with all of the great boards that are now available online there is little need for this. Playing cornhole is fantastic family time game that should be tried by everyone.
