Cool Things to Do in Palm Springs California This Winter

Expert Author JeanPierre Prieur

Cool things to do in Palm Springs California in the fall and winter months include unique adventures that the whole family can enjoy. Snowcapped mountains can be just viewed on a special tramway; or you can rent skis, sleds and snowshoes to explore this wonderland; or even stop to make a snowman. Between The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and the Living Desert your adventure has just begun.

1. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is in Chino Canyon in the north area of Palm Springs. For many long years it was the dream of Francis F. Crocker, a young electrical engineer, and was dubbed "Crocker's Folly" as no one knew how a tramway could climb those sheer cliffs. After bills were vetoed by the governor and World War II and then the Korean conflict delayed this project, construction began in July 1961. Helicopters were needed to fly 23,000 missions hauling men and materials over 26 months to erect five supporting towers and the 35,000-square-foot Mountain Station. Opened on September 14, 1963, installation and construction of new cars and an update of facilities was accomplished in 2000. The largest rotating tram cars in the world were constructed by the original tram car manufacturer, and the cars have been ridden by more than 12 million people.

2. The Palm Springs Soak City Water Park has two seven-story speed slides, an 800,000-gallon Wave Pool, a raft ride that takes you tumbling down a steep 60 feet, a 1,000-gallon dropping bucket, a 60-foot open raft ride, and a family Funhouse. Height requirements for many rides are in effect for children.

3. The Palm Springs Air Museum has one of the largest collections of World War II Warplane aircraft in the United States. A theater shows aviation documentaries, and their library has 8500 volumes related to aviation and military history. Artworks, combat photography, artifacts, uniforms, and other memorabilia are fascinating. On Saturdays there are educational programs and demonstration flights.

4. The Living Desert is a combination of a 250-acre zoo and a botanical garden specializing in the endangered plants and species of the desert. There are over 450 animals in the nature preserve from all over the world. See mountain lions, wolves, giraffes, cheetahs, tortoises, warthogs, meerkats and birds of prey. Feed the goats in the Petting Kraal. You'll also find a Wildlife Hospital, Wildlife Wonders Shows, and one of the largest model train displays in California.
