Getting growing children to eat right presents challenges for parents. We may want to feed them healthy foods, it just isn't always easy to get them to eat the foods that are best for them.
Growing children need the proper servings of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and milk products, each and every day. This is absolutely crucial to their growth and well being. How then, can we get our children to eat healthy foods?
The key is diversity and variety. You do not need to provide all of these healthy foods in every meal. Children can get the nutrition they need throughout the coarse of the day.
By adding healthy snacks to your child's daily diet, you are helping to ensure they get the proper nutrients. Instead of potato chips or other junk food, try a sliced cucumber. Most kids love sliced cucumbers with just a sprinkling of salt. The same holds true for cantaloupe and melon.
It is always better to serve fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Canned fruit is normally swimming in sticky sweet syrup, putting it in as bad a light as junk food, in my opinion. As for canned vegetables, most contain a lot of additives and preservatives. In the off season, or when fresh is not available, frozen is the next best thing.
Most children really like cheese. To help encourage them to eat healthy vegetables, melt some cheese over their favorites. This also will ensure proper calcium intake. Other great sources of calcium include ice cream, yogurt and pudding. Remember that for these, moderation is the key.
When cooking for your kids keep variety in mind. Cook a wide range of dishes to encourage your kids to try new things. If there is something they don't like it's okay. They at-least got to try it and form their own opinions. You'll undoubtedly discover a lot of healthy dishes they really enjoy.
Just like you, kids have things they do and do not like. The most frustrating thing, is to have your child push their plate away without even tasting anything. If your child is finicky in this way, try letting them help with the preparation of the meals. This can often make them want to eat the things they helped to make.
Cooking healthy for kids really isn't all that difficult. By adding variety and substituting fresh fruits and vegetables, for the unhealthy junk foods, your kids will enjoy eating healthier.
