Cookie Monster No More - Meet the New FTC "Do Not Give Me Cookies List" Proposal?

Expert Author Lance Winslow

Well, it looks like our digital online ecommerce gurus have gone a bridge too far, and now people are saying; "hey, wait just one minute there!" You see, most people value their privacy and don't want some third unknown party tracking their keystrokes, web searches, or websites visited. Further, many folks are already a little untrusting of viruses and junk emails.

An article in eCRM Guide; "Will FTC Online Tracking Restrictions Hurt CRM?" written by Drew Robb notes that the Federal Trade Commission is very worried about Internet Privacy, as well they should. And I am not sure how the FTC plans to police a "DO NOT Cookie Me" or "Do Not Track" opt out list. It's not like their successful Do Not Call List is not without controversy, and such an internet version might be a start, but doubtful if it will work.

The Customer Relationship Management eCommerce online consultants in that sector are skeptical that such a rule will only hurt consumers, and make their jobs tougher and invite more guess work into customer's preferences thus, lead to unnecessary contacts and emails that consumers consider junk.

Apparently, Robb's article indicated that the "...recent congressional testimony from FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz suggests that the agency favors stronger measures, such as a browser-based do-not-track mechanism similar to the do-not-call list that exists to rein in telemarketers. The goal is to allow Internet users to opt out of online behavioral tracking."

Most users would applaud the FTC's work in this regard, although even the FTC's work is sketchy at times, for instance; Identity Theft, Telemarketing Calls, Credit Card and Phone Bill extra charges, and SPAM. All of which are not much better even after the Federal Trade Commission made this their mission.

Can the FTC really stop the Cookie Monster from invading your computer, and will the FTC's Do Not Give Me Cookies List, amount to anything that really solves the problem. After all, the Internet Sector evolves much faster than FTC rule-making ever has. Please consider all this.
