Conversational Hypnosis - How to Use Quotations to Instantly Become More Persuasive and Influential

Expert Author Andrew Horton, Ph.D.

What would happen if you could easily plant virtually any idea in the mind of your listener and have them think about it without the slightest bit of resistance? Would that be a useful skill for you to have at your disposal? You can easily do this by using the hypnotic language pattern called quotations.

Quotations are statements that you can attribute to someone or something else. By doing so, you dramatically lessen the possibility of resistance to your statement on the part of your listener.

Just like stories and metaphors, quotations easily bypass the conscious rationale of your listeners and enter their unconscious mind while their conscious mind processes the content wrapped around the message you want to deliver. Let's jump right into an example from selling.

Let's say that you want to implant the idea that your prospect should lease your product rather than buy it outright. Instead of directly stating, "I think that you should lease the product," which may be resisted, you could say, "Smart Consumers Digest just reported that there has never been a better time to lease this product." That is, if the statement is true, of course.

To be even more persuasive, one or more quotes and potential sources of the quotes may be intertwined to elegantly create a mild conscious confusion in your listener. For example: "My client Jack Jones decided it was a good idea to lease this product because his accountant told him you should do that after reading an article in Smart Consumers Digest that said there has never been a better time to lease this product than right now." While this statement may look a little strange in its written form, when spoken, it engages the conscious mind and creates mild confusion regarding the actual sources of the statements while the meaningful message contained within the quote: "lease this product" is repeatedly presented to, and readily accepted by the unconscious mind of the listener.

Anyone can effectively use quotations to instantly become more persuasive and influential. You can draw from any source you wish. If you are selling in a business-to-business environment, it is useful to quote credible sources such as trade journals, consumer guides, and client case studies and testimonials. If you are using conversational hypnosis outside of business, you can quote your friends, family members, celebrities, even characters in movies. You can quote anyone you wish. The important thing is the message you embed within the quotation.

Now that you know easy it is to use quotations to persuade and influence others, take a few minutes to generate some quotations that you can use in your unique situation. Is there a certain point where you sometimes get stuck in your persuasion efforts? Then decide what message you would like to present to your listener at that particular point and find a quotation that embodies your message. If you need inspiration, review some client testimonials and draw quotations from them. Or you can search the web for quotes from famous or well known people.

A client recently told me about one of his favorite mentors: Napoleon Hill, author of the landmark book, "Think and Grow Rich," who said, "Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action." He said that he was often inspired to act just by reading that quotation. What changes in feelings, thoughts and actions will you inspire with your use of quotations?
