Last night my wife and I watched the movie called "The Negotiator". It starred Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. They were both hostage negotiators for the Chicago Police Dept. Both of the actors gave pretty powerful performances sharing the spotlight as you might imagine since both are top name actors.
The movie makes the case that the role of the negotiator is to be in total control of a tense situation. While both the characters were basically on the same side their characters were pitted against each other and a lot of the tension in the movie came from the back and forth between them. They weren't competing against each other. They were simply trying to get a job done and both characters were able to play off the other and eventually get to the bottom of the issue they were both trying to figure out.
In the movies the people that we are drawn to are frequently the ones in control. We see their confident characters as those that know what they're doing, know why they're doing it, and are able to express and explain themselves to other supporting characters. Most of the time they are very charismatic with a certain something that makes us like them. But, even though this is what happens in the movies, we can experience this in our own lives too.
Many times when watching an action movie or drama we are really drawn into the story and all of the different parts of it. This makes it kind of hard to actually see why the particular character seems to be so confident in themselves.
Is it the fact that they know how to handle themselves in a fight?, Or, is it because they always have the witty comeback when verbally put in a corner?, Or, is it because they know a secret that the others in the movie don't know?
Looking between the lines, it's not about knowing a secret, or how to fight or drive a car. Confident people "know themselves". They know what their strengths, and also their limitations, are. They don't "control the situation". They "control themselves in the situation".
So, looking at it simply, confidence in yourself is nothing more than knowing what you're doing and why you are doing it. So, self confidence is matter of "knowing yourself". When you "know yourself" you are better able to control yourself in a given situation, or avoid it altogether.
Confidence in yourself is best developed by learning how to do something and then being able to do it well. Of course, it's also important to why you are doing it in the first place. If you look at it this way, improving how you look at yourself is a lot easier to achieve than you might think. You just need to learn more about "you".
One of the best ways to find out more about you is to challenge yourself physically with exercise. Performing a regular exercise routine isn't just about doing push ups or running on a treadmill.
When you workout, it gives you time to spend alone (even if you are in the gym) with yourself and focus on learning to control how your body moves and how to make it move better under tense and challenging conditions.
Many times, however, for those of us who are lacking confidence, or feel a little self conscious about how we look don't feel the urge to head out to the gym. Not being familiar with the machines or even having the right "gym outfit" is enough to keep us in front of the TV with a bag of buttered popcorn.
With others, especially men, who aren't use to lifting weights or working out, the last thing that they're gonna want to do is be surrounded by a bunch of buff guys lifting a lot of heavy weights.
One solution is to just start working out at home without weights. In fact, learning to do body weight exercises is a great way to prepare yourself to transition into a weight lifting regimen if that's what you want to do.
The reason why doing workouts without weights is a good way to build self confidence is because you learn what you and your body are capable of in the most natural way. Without needing a lot of equipment or spending a lot of money.
A home body weight workout routine allows you to avoid having to go to the gym until you're ready. It also gives you a good opportunity to build strength and muscle at home without the pressure of feeling self conscious about what the gym rats think about you.
Lastly, the confidence building tips that you get from the self discipline of a regular workout routine will carry over into every other aspect of life. Not only will you feel better, but, because body weight exercises tend to tone your body with lean muscle and fat burning your appearance and the way that you carry yourself will change. And, you will be amazed by how people will approach you differently and offer unsolicited compliments.
So, if you're interested in improving self confidence, a regular workout without weights at home is an excellent way to accomplish it. You can learn an easy home exercise routine that can be done at your convenience without a lot of expense. You'll be able to learn more about yourself and therefore feel more in control, feeling good about your physical abilities.
