There are many people using the internet today. A fraction of them are financially able to attend educational classes to become computer literate; but a larger number of people who surf the internet are learning as they go. Computer safety rules are hard and fast in textbooks. Learning on your own means making mistakes; and with computers, that can be costly with so many viruses, worms and other huge problems that may be encountered along the way.
Knowing someone who is computer literate can help you avoid problems before they arise. And reading textbooks can be valuable too. Two of the best sources for these are schools and libraries. There are people who can guide you at both of these institutions. Most teachers know of students who are willing to help instruct others with computer skills one-on-one.
They may charge a small fee, or give free advice. Most libraries are now equipped with computers that the public can use free of charge. They also have many textbooks to share for a short time to help a person learn computer skills. Most librarians are trained to assist the public with basic knowledge of computers. If you get internet service through phone companies, some of them may have free help-lines to assist those learning how to use the computer.
Do not open e-mail unless you know who it is from. Many viruses and problems can come into your computer system through forwarded emails, or from e-mail sources you do not personally know. Some problems may come in the form of returned e-mails. Spam can be sent in many ways. When not sure of the source, it is best not to open any e-mail. Deleting unknown and unwanted e-mail daily from your system can help in reducing the problems that may arise.
