It's well known the fact that most children who start playing basketball from an early age they develop a thirst for the sport and the competition and the recreational programs that would be available can't satisfy their thirst. They are more focused on more competitive games to participate in so that they can better improve their basketball skills. Competitive leagues are focused on providing this kind of environments for this type of youngsters, more commonly they are referred to as all-star or travel teams. Only youngsters who have developed high skill levels, huge amount of interest and dedication towards basketball, can participate in competitive leagues.
Coaches usually join competitive leagues, only in the case that they have a strong coaching background and proven to have strong techniques and coaching capabilities to compete in their games. This is a great way for you to improve your coaching capabilities even further and it will be a good improvement to your competitive side as well, who knows maybe in the future you will decide to take over another team, and you experience in a competitive league will prove to be useful. A little word of advice, if you are the case in which you volunteered to coach a team which is part of a competitive league (even your son put you up to the task, or other parents decided you are the man for the job, after they voted), the first thing you should do if you feel you are inexperienced enough, is to inform the league director as soon as possible and tell him or her, that you are looking for the best interest of the kids and you would prefer to coach in a less competitive league and to coach a less experienced team.
