Expert Author MJ Schrader

With product creation, advertising copy, article writing, and more the online business owner has a busy schedule. Add in building and being social on social networking sites and adding social media and a schedule can easily be overrun. The end goal of all these things is creating a successful online business.

Enter light-blogging, between blogging and micro-blogging.

Blog posts are generally articles with the added bonus of images or videos. Micro-blogging is the 140 characters of Twitter. But there is a fuzzy land between the two which allows you to have a post with an image and a few words, a video, an article or a bookmark. There are two companies stand out in this in between world. Tumblr and Posterous each has unique capabilities for online business success.

What is Tumblr?

You can easily add multiple media types to this light-blog service. Click the icon related to your media format and add it to your Tumblog, which is what they call their blogs. Add text, photos, quotes, links, chat, audio and video. The ease to add these social media formats makes these very appealing.

What are the advantages of Tumblr?

It connects directly to WordPress.com, Vimeo, Digg, and some other sites which directly feed their information into Tumblr. These create new posts automatically to create a form of social networking aggregation service. You can also find the feed link of other sites to add them to your Tumblog automatically.

What are the disadvantages of Tumblr?

It does not work in reverse. Tumblr automatically aggregates information but it does not post to those sites. Tumblr does not like affiliate links and has strict policies about creating meaningful content.

What are the advantages of Posterous?

You can create posts on Posterous but the claim to fame is the ability to add posts easily via email. Email from a regular service or email from your phone. Posts will be automatically posted to any sites you connect to your Posterous account. When you post that article on Posterous, you can have a link on Twitter, Plurk, posted on your blog, and other sites. Post once and your post goes where it needs. Same with videos going to video sites or photos to photo sites.

What if I don't want this advertising copy on all the sites?

When you use email you can send it to the address that will post it everywhere or just to Posterous, or Plurk or Posterous and Plurk or any combination you want. Also you can post to Tumblr, where Tumblr can not post to Posterous.

What are the disadvantages?

If you have a regular blog and want it to automatically add posts to Posterous it does not work that way. Tumblr brings posts in. Posterous sends posts out.

What is similar?

You can now set both of them to look like your branding theme. You could use Posterous to send posts everywhere you need including Tumblr. Either way you have a way to have various media formats in a single place to add extra Internet links and increase your online business success.
