Communication - Key to Successful Leadership

Communication is the key that unlocks the door to successful leadership. A good leader needs to be able to let his or her followers know what they are thinking, feeling, and expecting from their efforts. If these things are communicated in an effective manner, the entire business that you are conducting will run the risk of being a lackluster company at best. Here are 3 items that are essential to do when it comes to communicating successfully with the people that you work with on a daily basis.

The first thing that a leader must do is be cognizant that his communication exemplifies the clarity of his directions. As the leader of your small business, you may be clear on what you are saying, but this does not mean that the person that you outsource an important part of your work to understands the task at hand. However, you can easily clear up any confusion by insisting that your workers reiterate your instructions back to you in their own words. Simply ask your employees to repeat what you have told them to do and you may be surprised at what this will accomplish. If they do not have a firm grasp on what you have asked, you can explain it again. This will allow you to make sure that they understand your instructions from the start, rather than waiting for an entire day to pass. In business, time is a valuable commodity and should not be sacrificed at any cost. Letting your workers repeat what you have communicated to them will also allow them to practice their communication skills, and express their needs more clearly.

Secondly, be aware of your tone of voice when you are speaking. As the head of a work-from- home business, we need to realize that we should speak to others as we want to be spoken to as well. Remember that the people to whom you are communicating are human beings first, and workers second. If you treat your employees like gold, they will shine brightly. This sense of encouragement that they feel will be reflected in the quality of their work. Successful leadership means keeping your voice at a calm, firm, strong level. There is no need to shout at people because this indicated that you have lost control of the situation. Losing control of any one situation will not give your workers the confidence they need to finish the jobs they have been assigned.

Lastly, set an example for the employees of your online business. They should be able to see you communicate on the phone, internet, or in person with others and imitate your style of communication. The excellent example of a successful business communicator can help our employees become the future leaders of our business. In the end, you are the boss of your company. What you say, how you say it, the words that you use, and your example must be closely monitored so that your small business will excel and create the leaders of tomorrow that will cause your business to prosper for many years. Practice excellent communication skills as a part of successful leadership.
