Communicate Effectively With Your Kid

Each of us has the ardent need to talk and be heard - and so do our children. Our kids want to be heard and they need someone who will listen as they share their innermost thoughts and feelings and desires. And who better can your child turn to but you, the parents? Therefore, communication plays an integral role in your child's life. That means that you should master the art of developing effective communication with your child.

As your child leaves the house, he is exposed to thousands of verbal and non-verbal communications each day from every individual that your child makes contact with. While it is true that parents have no control how other people communicate with your child, you can make adjustments as far as your personal responses to your child's attempt to communicate are concerned.

By communicating effectively to your kids, you will help them determine the quality of their lives in the future. When you are able to understand the inner thoughts and feelings of your child and when you are able to handle different situations efficiently, it will have a significant impact in your child's overall development - mental, physical and emotional.

There are a few things that you should know when it comes to communicating effectively with your child. First, you have to make sure that you spend time with your kids as much as you can. Spending quality time with your child is perhaps the most important thing that you can do for your child. Spending time means giving your child undivided attention and without interruptions.

By spending quality time with your kids, you will give him a sense of worth and boost his confidence as you discuss important matters in his life. With frequent conversations, you will better understand your child and recognize his individuality and learn what actually motivates and works best for him.

Another thing that you also have to remember is to listen carefully. Creating that connection with your child is the key. When you carefully listen to your child, you will be able to spark up that connection. Mere parental advice, instructions or correction will simply not work without paying attention. But if you listen carefully and attentively, your child will feel comfortable confiding in you.

But perhaps the most important thing that you should remember if you want to effectively communicate with your child is to give clear and simple instructions. Do not confuse your kids with too many gestures or idioms. If you want your child to be quiet at church, then say so.

Do not merely look at him without telling him anything. However, you should also be careful about telling him too many things. Too many words generally tend to nullify the focal message. So keep your instructions short and direct.
