There are thirty-five categories of different types of roses, and it is well known that no other flower has this kind of broad variety in species, colours, sizes, forms and blooms. The year "1867" is used to classify roses into different "ages", because the first hybrid tea, namely La France, was introduced in this year. Roses that were known before this year is usually called Old Garden Roses and those discovered after this date are referred to as Modern Roses. Roses have always been symbols of beauty and love and were identifies with various goddesses of these aspects, like the Greek Aphrodite and the Roman Venus. People have thus made use of rose garden since very early days (for example 18th century England). The following descriptions and names are the roses that you will be able to find quite easily.
Many roses look a lot alike, but this does not mean they are the same type of rose. There is a large divergence among these different types (there are approximately 120 different kinds of roses). Hybrid Tea Roses, for example, are probably the most popular and most well-known type of roses, because they are beautiful, easy to take care of and extremely fragrant. Some of them are created by cross breeding different types. They are usually supported by one long and straight stem and can grow up to 1.8meters tall. An individual flower can grow up to 12cm wide and are well liked because they are so easy to make cuttings of. The Gallic Rose is another commonly found type of rose, because it is a deciduous shrub that forms patches of shrubbery and its stems have glandular bristles and prickles. Rosa gallica (the Gallic Rose, French Rose, or Rose of Provins) is a species of rose native to southern and central Europe eastwards to Turkey and the Caucasus. Leaves of the Gallica are pinnate and have three to seven blue-green leaflets. The flowers are clustered together and the flower is fragrant and deep pink.
The Damask Rose or the "Rose of Castile," is another common hybrid originating from Rosa Gallica and Rosa Moschata. Sometimes even the Rosa Fedtschenkoana is associated with the Damask. This type of rose is popular due to its wonderful fragrance. It is also greatly harvested to make rose oils, rose waters and to use in various perfumes. People even use these petals to make teas and to put flavour in food. The Provence Rose or Rose de Mai, another hybrid rose, is complex, because it is made up of the Rosa moschata, Rosa canina, Rosa damascena and the Gallica. This rose was made by Dutch perfumers in the 1600's to make effective and very fragrant perfumes.
The China Rose is native to central China and is made up of a shrub that can grow up to 2m tall. These leaves are also pinnate and have 3 to 5 leaflets. In some cases they will have pink or red petals. The last commonly found type of rose is the Musk Rose, which origins lie in the western Himalayas and has been in cultivation for a very long time.
