With the success of large franchises such as Coca Cola and other big names out there, many people are looking to cash in on franchising as a means of beginning to get themselves on the path to self employment. When it comes to looking into a franchise, you have to sit down and ask some hard questions first, before you research anything, before you sign any papers or buy in. Let's look into some of the things you need to know before you decide that a franchise may be the right option for you.
What Can I Afford Up Front? How Much Will This Cost?
Getting the skinny on how much a franchise is going to cost you up front is always good. Now, it's very true that franchises are often much less expensive to start up than a mom and pop type of business, or something you own yourself, but still- make no mistake, you'll still be paying up front. You need to figure out not only how much up front with each of your options but how much you've got to invest as well.
Are there any other expenses along the way?
You may have to take care of the purchase of equipment and supplies, and other things- there may be more fees than simply the start up and you need to take a long look at any costs. The franchise itself may not be trying to necessarily hide them, but it is always a good idea to take a closer look at the fine print.
What are the current and projected income and profits?
Most franchisers are all to happy to show you these figures. What their other franchisees are making, how they have been successful and what sort of money they have been earning. In this way, you can find out if this is perhaps something that you also could turn a decent profit with.
Restrictions or Benefits From Suppliers?
Looking into any given franchise, you'll want to know if they have certain suppliers you must go through, or if they just recommend. More often than not, franchises have set suppliers that they go through for equipment and inventory, and these often come with discounts.
Territories?
Making sure that you aren't being set up to compete within the same territory as another franchisee, or perhaps that there is enough business to go around is another way that many franchisees fall short. Look into what sorts of protections are offered in these cases, or if those are even needed. In addition to this, you may want to see if when a new territory that borders yours opens, if you perhaps get the option to take it first.
There are many potential questions that you may ask a potential franchise opportunity before you buy in- anything that you feel is of concern is a good thing to write down. Make sure that you are clear on everything you need to do, or may just need to know before you begin discussions and this will make your choice that much more clear for you in not only buying the franchise itself but negotiating a contract.
