Common Myths About Exercise

Success with your fitness training regime can only be achieved if you have proper knowledge about what you are doing. Fitness and health are both vast concepts and there is no resource which can provide you with comprehensive information regarding exercise. It is for this reason that you should have specific fitness goals and pursue them with the help of a certified fitness trainer. But then, it is also important for you to know some of the common misconceptions about exercise, that some if not most, believe to be true.

By knowing about these myths and, more importantly, about the truth, you can hope to get the best out of fitness training by doing the right things in the right way.

1. Your body should hurt or ache after a good training session. The truth is that exercise does not have to be painful in order to be effective. If you are a beginner, you might feel a little sore, but if pain recurs you are probably not training right. Pains which lasts more than two days after exercise does not indicate a superb session but is actually a symptom of 'delayed onset muscle soreness'. This is a health condition which, if aggravated, can cause serious damage to you muscles.

2. You are unfit if you sweat a lot during exercise. The truth in this case, is just the opposite. Sweat is a natural reaction of your body to keep the core temperature under control, when you exercise. In fact if you don't sweat when you exercise, you are probably dehydrated or there is a problem with your sweat glands.

3. Muscle turns to fat when you quit exercise. The fact is that this is a biologically impossible phenomenon. Muscle and fat are composed of distinctly different tissues and one cannot convert to the other. In case you quit exercise, you can gain new body fat and lose hard-built muscle mass.

4. The longer you exercise the more weight you can lose. This is perhaps a half-truth, because exercise duration has a bearing on the results. But this is not to say that exercising for hours at a stretch is the right way to go about it. In fact, it has been proven that short duration, high intensity exercises can help you burn more calories than exercising longer at lower intensity. If you are fit enough to sustain high intensity exercise, there's nothing more effective.

5. You can eat anything you want, provided you workout. This myth must have originated from the fact that people cheat on their diets and console themselves with the fact that they will make up for it in the gym! If you want to reach your fitness goals, your diet is as important as exercise. All benefits of exercise can be offset by improper nutrition and so, watch what you eat.

6. Exercise is nothing but working out hard. The truth is that any activity is better than no activity. You do not have to slog for hours at the gym. Walking your dog every evening can be enough exercise, if your fitness goals are not too lofty.
