If you find yourself having major trouble falling asleep or even staying asleep, then there may be many different factors affecting you and causing your sleeplessness. First you may need to analyse what you did that day. Did you have a fight with someone or did something major happen at work? Or did you have a late night meal or snack?

Suffering from poor quality sleep is a medical concern no matter what its cause or duration, even if your problem has only been temporary. It may be a good idea to visit your doctor who can offer several suggestions that may assist you in sleeping better, and they may also prescribe you with a non-addicting sleep medication for those nights when sleep just won't come.

Poor sleep comes in many different forms. For some, once their head hits the pillow they are immediately asleep, but awaken in the middle of the night and find themselves pacing the floor. Or maybe you lie awake just staring at the ceiling for hours on end, wondering when sleep will come. If could even be that you don't have any trouble falling asleep, yet you wake up earlier than you would like to. Or maybe you seem to sleep okay, but you awaken feeling groggy and unrefreshed.

No matter how the problem presents itself, this kind of disruption results in less than optimal sleep which means your brain isn't getting enough sleep in order to repair your body and recharge itself.

Here is a list of common factors that can cause occasional sleeplessness:-

• Suffering from nasal congestion
• Drinking a caffeine drink close to bedtime
• Suffering with disruptive and noisy neighbours
• Over exercising too close to bedtime
• Pain from arthritis, headaches, or some other illness that causes you pain and discomfort
• Lying on an uncomfortable pillow or mattress
• Having pets or kids in bed with you
• Sleeping in a bedroom that is too cluttered
• Sleeping in an uncomfortable environment that is either too hot or cold
• Drinking alcohol or smoking just before bed
• Being stressed about work or school or even getting excited about an upcoming event, like a vacation or competition
• Taking herbal supplements that over stimulate you
• Taking recreational drugs prior to bedtime

If you still find your sleepiness persisting and it's now impacting your everyday life, then making an appointment to see your doctor may be the first step in helping you find the cause to your sleeplessness.
