Commercial Power Factor Conditioners Save Thousands

Expert Author Robert Easterling

We have issued several articles that address the great importance of reducing the monthly electrical costs associated with residential homes through the use of power factor conditioners. We have also provided the technical data which clearly shows how power factor affects your energy consumption and the life of the electrical appliances that use power throughout the home. We were recently asked whether these same systems would have just as much impact on commercial businesses and the answer is an absolute YES. Commercial buildings can use up to more than ten times the amount of power that residential homes use every month and as power factor is no respecter of building size it can mean the difference between a $5000 per month electric bill and a $3000 electric bill.

The same can be said for the electrical appliances used in these businesses with the only exception being that typically these appliances are much larger and have larger electrical consumption rates than those used in homes. Their motors are still experiencing the same heat issues due to voltage drops which increases the amperage required by each and as a result are wasting energy through heat dissipation. This heat stress is also the primary culprit in AC motor failures which increase your operational costs in replacements and repairs of these appliances. Ballasted lighting systems are also using far more energy than they actually require and without an intelligent HID lighting system controller your power factor goes unchecked costing companies untold tens of thousands of dollars per year in un-necessary energy costs.

Many commercial businesses require the use of pumps, refrigeration units, air conditioning systems, lighting systems and the like which are no different than most homes however in terms of size their requirements mean super sized systems with expensive power bills. Many times these costs end up being passed along to the consumer in higher priced products or services and it simply does not have to be this expensive for either the company or its customers. In the current economy companies must buy smarter to reduce costs across the board and in nearly every aspect of their building management these costs can be dramatically reduced by simply correcting their power factor. These systems are not a new technology and in fact have been around and in use by industry since the 1970's energy crisis when at that time they were first developed.

Improving a company's bottom line through intelligent use of resources should be every building managers primary concern and with these systems in place your energy costs can be greatly reduced. Lower costs can equal lower prices to the consumer which means an increase in business and higher annual profits which is why you went into business in the first place. It should also be noted that by reducing your company's energy waste you are in effect also greatly reducing the amounts of oil and coal that are required in generating the electricity that you depend on.
