Here it is, the day you have been waiting for, your 18th birthday. The day you are legally grown up.
Now, you get to make adult decisions. You can legally enter into contracts, i.e. buy your own car, rent an apartment, or even buy a house. But, guess what, you also get to have the responsibility that comes with all of that, including paying for them. What does that mean - you will have to hold a job. Not like your summer jobs where you could quit if you wanted to because, after all, mom and/or dad were providing a roof over your head, food in your mouth, and clothes on your back - all the basics you needed to survive.
Buying a car means, along with the monthly payments you will have to make, you will have the added expense of maintaining insurance on it, keeping it filled with gas, keeping the proper air pressure in the tires, keeping the oil changed on a regular basis, having tune-ups done on a regular basis, and having it repaired when things break on it. It is not all about buying a car, jumping in it, and going wherever you want whenever you want. Although that is nice, if you do not do all those other things listed above, you will not have a car for long.
So, you now have a car and have decided you want your own digs! Just like the car, having your own digs brings even more responsibility for you. You go out and rent an apartment and now you get to pay your monthly rent and utilities along with your car payments and expenses. Even if your utilities are included in your rent, that generally means the electric and water (if applicable), you will need to pay for telephone service if you want to have a telephone, cable if you want to have cable television, and internet service if you want to have access to the internet from your new apartment. You will also want to buy some renters insurance to protect your possessions in case of loss - you can generally pay for that monthly or by the year. Now comes the best part, you get to pay for your very own groceries, whatever you want to eat. You also get to pay for your own cleaning supplies, your toilet paper, and your other needful household items. On top of that, you get to buy your very own clothes and shoes.
Welcome to adulthood! Hopefully, you took time to enjoy your childhood. You can now look forward to having your adult responsibilities for the rest of your life!
