Coaching Winning Basketball - On Offense and Defense

Coaching winning basketball is the desire of all who coach the game. The thrill of victory is great. The agony of defeat usually lasts longer, especially if there are lots of defeats between victories. What is the key to coaching winning basketball? Its no secret, it is just hard to admit. The coach is the key to winning or losing basketball games. Good coaches do not usually lose a lot of games, bad coaches usually do not win a lot basketball games. No coach coaches the game to lose. Yet, many lose games because the coach and the team were not prepared to win.

First, winning is about knowledge and preparation in all areas of basketball by the coach.

Second, winning is about the coach teaching the players the mechanics and fundamentals of the game and having them learn how to correctly perform the various skills.

Third, winning is about the development of offensive and defensive systems that are taught during practices. These systems allows the coach to coach on game day and the team to be able score the most points at the end of the game. Many coaches coach at practices and try to teach on game days.

What is coaching? It is the "Chess Match", that mental game, that goes on between the two coaches during he game. A coach and his team must be prepared to handle any strategy that the other coach uses. By having an effective response, the coach can more or less neutralize the effects or take advantage of what the other coach/team tried to do. If one coach put on a full court press, the other coach must be able to counter it with a effective full court offense or risk being pressed the whole game or until the other team is well ahead.

It is these and many other situations occur many times during a game, one coach is always trying find something that the other coach/team can not counter effectively. The game winner is usually the one whom made enough effective response (counters) to be able to score the most points.

What is teaching and what is the process? Teaching in basketball is the process of passing along knowledge or information to players so that they will understand and be able to successfully execute the various skills that are required to play the game. The teaching process in basketball involves the following steps:

• A explanation of the skill in detail (proper mechanics or techniques) in order to give a mental picture of the skill.
• A roper demonstration of the skill to give a visual picture of it.
• Adequate practice time to perform the skill
• The giving of feedback to the players and making suggestion to correct the bad mechanics or techniques
• Provide more practice time on performing the skill
• Provide less corrections as the players mechanics and techniques improve

In basketball, as in other sports, this process part to teaching does not always take place. Most coaches assume that the player(s) already have the knowledge and some skill, and does not need a thorough, detailed explanation. They only needs to practice more in order to improve their skill levels.

The coach begin with the practice part of teaching (doing drills), but does not provide any feedback to correct faulty mechanics or techniques. These are practiced over and over again during the drills, practice after practice. Many coaches forget that practice is the time for making corrections (teaching) as you go through the drills, pointing out the mistakes and errors, explaining how they are to be done correctly. These faulty skills that the coach will be coaching during the game.

The coach will have to take all the things that he developed in practice and apply them to the game. He will make decisions based on how, what was taught in practice, what will be use during the game, when it will be used, where it will be used, and when to change it to something else. These decisions are the pieces to that "Chess Match". Each coach will be trying to gain an advantage over the other by making decisions based on what was taught in practice.

While no coach intentionally tries to lose games, they do not realize that the loses were a direct result of the lack of knowledge and inadequate preparation of his players. In order to be a winning coach, the coach must:

• have a very good understanding of the game,
• understand the detailed mechanics and techniques of the various skills,
• have developed a philosophy about the game.
• know how to develop an effective offensive and defensive system
• learn how to teach in practices rather than coach

Coaching winning basketball begins and ends with the coach!

About me: I have a teaching degree in physical education and have taught for 34 years. I have coached at the middle school and high school levels for nearly 25 years. Having coached several sports, basketball and soccer are my favorite ones to coach.

I have spent time learning every aspect the game of basketball. I have read many articles and books, taught at camps, attended seminars and talked with few D-1 coaches over the years. My objective in coaching was to be the best teacher possible in the teaching of skills and techniques/mechanics to my players, and the best coach possible in the developing of basketball strategies, concepts, game preparation, game play and management so that my players could be the best players possible and the best team possible.
