Clam Shell mobiles
Clam shell mobiles are basically phones that are in two pieces which fold against each other. They close together like a clam, hence the name of the design.
The advantages of a clam shell mobile is that it allows you to hear and speak more clearly on the phone. This is because the speaker is placed near your ear more and the phone receiver is placed more naturally near the mouth. Also, another big advantage of clam shell mobiles is that the screen and buttons are protected when it is closed. You don't have to worry about your screen getting scratched by your keys when you have the phone in your pocket.
The big disadvantage to this design is that when your phone rings, you need to flip open the phone to answer it and also flip the phone if you want to call someone. With an open faced mobile, you don't have that problem.
Open faced mobiles
Open faced mobiles are basically mobiles that don't fold or have a separate section like a clam shell mobile. All the buttons and screens are on the front, and there is no need to mechanically access them.
The biggest advantage to open face mobiles is that you can access the screen and buttons immediately when you want to. You don't have to flip the phone to use when you are answering a call. You can quickly press a button and receive the call.
Also with open face phones, there is a decreased chance of things breaking off your mobile. This is because an open faced phone is just one unit, not two units which are connected together by a small connection like a clam shell.
The disadvantage with this type of phone is that the screen can be easily scratched because there is no cover for the screen and is also generally larger than a clam shell phone. But, this can be easily remedied by using a screen cover. Technology is also getting better where open faced mobiles are getting much smaller!
