One way to protect yourself from cancer is not to smoke cigarettes. The carcinogens that are in cigarettes cause damage to your DNA, and cause cells to divide faster than their normal rate causing cancer. Cigarette smoking causes 85% of lung cancer deaths and second hand smoke is responsible for an estimated 4,000 lung cancer deaths among the United States each year. Tobacco smoke is the leading cause of cancer within men and women and is the most difficult one to treat . Smoking also causes emphysema, chronic bronchitis, Cardiovascular disease, cartaracts, stillbirth, Low birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome, and stroke. Smoking cigarettes also causes most of these cancers as well, Acute myeloid leukemia, Kidney, stomach, oral cavity, pharynx, cervical, pancreatic, larynx, esophagus,and bladder cancers. Each year over 400,000 smokers will die. Smoking kills more American Citizens than suicide, alcohol, motor vehicle accidents, sexually transmitted diseases, violence and illegal drugs combined. Smoking also causes these other health problems, gum disease, bone thinning and peptic ulcers. Smoking also limits a persons activities making it harder to breath, work, get around , and play with loved ones.

Over 4,000 individual compounds have been identified in cigarette smoke. Over 43 of these are deadly cancer causing agents. People who quit smoking cigarettes have greater health benefits; those who quit by age 40 avoid 80% of the risk of dying early. It's never to late to quit smoking cigarettes no matter how long you have been smoking just as long as you quit on time and do not end up with cancer.
