Chronic Upper Back Pain - These Are Tried and Tested Treatments

Back pain is something we all experience and is one of the most common problems we have.  Generally, this lasts for a few days and can be cured with proper exercise, cold and warm compresses.  However, if you are experiencing chronic upper back pain that is another story.  This pain can last for months to a lifetime.

Chronic upper back pain can come from injuries, surgeries and a number of diseases.  This can be difficult to diagnose in that depending on what has caused it will demonstrate somewhat different symptoms in different individuals.  This pain may be just physiological but can involve brain responses.  Therefore, physical therapist or healthcare providers may use combinations of therapies to get this situation under control.  You do not want to rest!  Exercise is necessary for your recovery.

Chronic upper back pain involves the thoracic part of your spine and is not as common as neck and lower back pain.  Your neck and lower back have a greater range of motion making them more susceptible to injury.  Your upper back (thoracic spine) has limited mobility and is used primarily for stability making injury less common.  Common causes include sports and car accidents as well as herniated discs.

You will need a thorough exam by your healthcare provider and discuss the probable cause of your pain.  At that time, your doctor will recommend an appropriate therapy.  Your doctor will probably discuss an exercise program to help strengthen your muscles to relieve any tension you may have.  These exercises may include stretching, aerobic exercise, strength training and flexibility exercises.  If you can't do this on your own, you may need to get a physical therapist to assist you.

Since the pain may be severe, psychological approaches may be used as well.  You will need to be able to dissociate the pain from your body by talking and thinking positive outcomes.  It will be necessary to concentrate on how much better off you will be at the end of your exercise period.  You will want to control your breathing by taking deep and slow breaths.  This is a form of relaxation therapy that will help elevate your mood.  Try to think of beautiful scenery or pleasant experiences you have had in your past or perhaps things you would love to do in the future.  It will take time to develop this frame of mind but is important to over come your chronic upper back pain.  Some individuals have actually used hypnosis to divert attention away from their pain.

Message therapy is another way to go.  If you are having problems following your exercises because the pain is so great, a daily message may take its place until you are ready to resume your exercises.  In fact, you may want to continue message therapy throughout your recovery.  Some doctors and in particular chiropractors offer ultrasound therapies.  This is also used in conjunction with proper exercise.  Ultrasound therapies allow for vibration of the injured tissue, which generates heat and allows for increased blood flow to the damaged area.  All of this allows for faster healing.

There are natural healing systems available that can be done in the privacy of your own home or when you exercise outside.  The idea is to increase blood flow to the damaged tissue.   Did you know it is possible for your body to heal itself?  Various neoprene wraps that emit electro-magnetic energy fasten with Velcro closures that you can buy at your drug store.  Wrapping these bands around the injured area immediately increases blood flow to that region.  Greater blood flow brings more nutrients and oxygen that the damaged tissue needs to have to heal.  In addition, of course don't forget the old standby of cold and hot compresses.  You can buy compresses that can go in your microwave to be heated when you need warmth and can also be put in your freezer when you need a cold compress.  These are very popular and in fact:-

It is a good idea to buy one when you don't need one so that you are prepared when back pain strikes. No matter what the cause of your chronic upper back pain there are some simple remedies you can use at home. If your back pain persists, you should see a healthcare provider to get a proper diagnosis. And, remember that exercise is paramount. Rest will not help you here and in general will make you situation worse.
