Choosing the Right Employee to Represent Your Business

Expert Author Nick Simpson

Many times smaller companies may only have one or two dedicated customer service representatives. It can be hard choosing the right employee, one that will be not only able to take care of customer situations, but also able to represent your business in a positive fashion even when it's hard. This can be one of the most important decisions a business owner makes as they start to transition from a small one man operation into a larger business entity. You must make sure that this person cannot only be helpful to your customers, but also paint a positive picture of your businesses image as they communicate with new and old clients.

Choosing the right person for the job can be very complicated. However, the best place to start is with finding people who have worked in a high speed customer service environment. People that have experience in these areas, usually are capable of dealing with high levels of stress and still staying cool. Anybody who has worked at a call center knows exactly what I am talking about here. There is nothing wrong with training a new employee, but you can save many hours of "what if" situations by hiring a new employee who has already been put on the spot many times and understands how to respond to customers when they are not happy. It is easy to find a customer service representative that would do fine when the customers are all peaches and cream. The unfortunate reality is that the general public does not always treat customer service guys and gals with much respect, especially if they think that they have been wronged in some way.

Another quick and easy way to see if the person you are considering for the new position has what it takes to be a great representative for you and your company is to do some very basic role playing. Just asking some rude or awkward questions and having them try to come up with a retort on the spot is a great way to see their true colors within minutes. If a person does not know how to respond or comes back with answers that you don't think are very becoming of you and your business, it may be time to move on to the next interview.

No matter who you choose, you will most likely have a lot of training ahead of you, so make sure you choose somebody who you feel that you can work with on a personal level too. Hopefully some of the information here helps you find a perfect candidate and if you choose wisely, your customers will thank you with repeat business for years to come.
