Choosing an Oak Baseboard Installer

Expert Author Vince Samios

Baseboard is more than just a floor protector; it is also a decorative finishing piece. You can choose all sorts of baseboard materials and looks, but the most commonly used baseboard material is oak. Oak baseboard is not only attractive, but it is also a sturdy material that will stand the test of time and the almost any amount of traffic that a room may see. What you need is to find someone who can install the baseboards correctly.

The best way to find someone to help you with the installation of your oak baseboards is to find a friend or peer who can provide you with a great recommendation. If you are having trouble getting recommendations or just get some names, but not a glowing review, then you'll need to look for additional candidates to add to your list. One place to find additional candidates is just by going through the phonebook. You want to look for candidates listed under finishing contractors for this type of work.

You need to have a list of three to five candidates before you move on to the next step. Now, before you think this is too much work for simple baseboard installation, keep in mind that following these steps is what you should do no matter what sort of contractor you are hiring for. Knowing that, you want to next create a list of questions that you can ask each of candidates on your list.

When you meet with each of the candidates on your list it will be important that you come prepared with a list of questions. You need to create this list in advance of your meeting. While other questions will come to mind during the meeting, you will need to know that there is a list of things you want to find out from each candidate. Asking each candidate the same list of questions is very important and should not be overlooked.

Once you have met with each of the candidates you will need to have each of them follow up with you. They should provide you with a bid on the job as well as a list of references. It will be up to you to follow through on the references. You will need to call them and ask if you can see the work in person. While you may be offered a photo of the work instead, if you can see the work in person that is always a better way to go for a real look at what has been done.

After you have met with the candidates, reviewed their bids and their previous work, you should be able to make a decision about who you would like to hire.
