Choosing a Kettle For Your Kitchen

A tea kettle is one of those kitchen items you just can't do without. It is incredibly inconvenient to make tea and other hot drinks by boiling water in a pan every time and there are some very inexpensive kettles available to buy so there's no reason not to have one.

There are basically two main types of kettles you can buy - electric which you plug directly into your mains electricity and stove top which are heated on your kitchen stove in order to boil the water. Most people these days prefer the convenience and speed of an electric kettle but a stove top kettle looks great in a traditional kitchen and has some novelty value, particularly if you choose one with a whistle.

Many electric kettles now are cordless which means the plug providing electricity is connected to a separate base so you can freely pick up the kettle and carry it to the other side of the kitchen without unplugging it first. Modern kettles should be safe to leave plugged in all the time as they have an automatic shutoff which activates when the water is boiled or when it is below the minimum level.

Stove top kettles are the more traditional type and are often fitted with a whistle that alerts you to when the water is boiling. They may be made from cast iron, aluminum or enameled steel. Many people think that tea tastes better when boiled in a traditional stove top kettle.
