When you are just starting out creating e-books, you want to choose a format that is easy for the reader to absorb. Unlike a traditional book, the reader may be looking at a screen or even reading your book from a phone. Format is critical and if you want to know exactly the right way to format your book, keep reading.
A traditional book is something that you read for pleasure, most likely. This is something where you take your time, perhaps reading it on your free time and the pace is at your leisure. This is not true for most e-books. Your customer has paid good money for a solution to a problem that has been bothering them. They want the answer now and they want it as quickly as possible.
Therefore, you don't have to create a 500 page piece of literature in order to get your point across. Sometimes you can charge substantial amounts of money for a simple report. Remember that your customer wants the answer to his or her problem quickly. You can create a product that is less than a hundred pages and still give the customer exactly what he/she is looking for.
When you write, use very short paragraphs that are easily digestible. Many sections can be summed up in bullet points as well. Tell the customer exactly what problem you are going to solve and then deliver it to them on a silver platter. People want to have their hand's held and they want a step-by-step solution to the issue at hand. Most of your potential customers will not shell out money for philosophy. They want answers.
Format your book in a vertical fashion, since this will be what people are used to reading as a regular book. This format also fits better on mobile devices and makes it easier to print out if the customer wishes to do so. There is nothing more frustrating than having to read something where you have to scroll sideways as well as vertically in order to read the content.
Last, make sure that there is plenty of room for the eye to travel along the page. Leave plenty of white space and large margins. Your customer will want to feel as if they are flying through the content and absorbing at it a record rate. If they don't read the majority of your report the first time they pick it up, they probably will never finish it. You want them to read it, because you want to show the customer how you can help them and how you also have additional products available that you can sell them.
