Choosing a business name is not always easy; there are a lot of things to consider. These tips will help you to choose a business name that is a good fit for your organization.
1. Is it memorable?
A business name that is too generic will not be remembered by your customers or clients. Ensure your name is unique and compelling enough that is will be remembered and will stand out from the competition.
2. Can your company grow with the name?
It can be helpful to choose a name that is somewhat descriptive, that is, it describes the nature of your business. However, many businesses evolve over time, so the nature of the business ends up being quite different from the original vision for the business. If your business name is too specific, it may limit your growth as a company, or you may face the need to change the name of your business as the nature of your business changes.
3. Is the URL available?
It becomes increasingly difficult to obtain URLs, particularly ones that have a desirable extension (such as .com) and are not long and convoluted. Check on the availability of the URL related to the name of your business. If it is available, purchase the domain name immediately, while you can, even if you don't have immediate plans to launch a website. If it is not available, consider whether you can make a slight adjustment (for example, adding a word) to the URL and still have a URL that is simple and memorable.
4. What image does the name convey?
Different business names don't resonate in the same way with all groups of people. Ensure your business name conveys an appropriate image to your target market.
5. Is it easy to spell and pronounce?
A name that is difficult to spell or pronounce can make it difficult for people to find your business. If potential customers cannot spell or pronounce the name of your business, they won't be able to look it up online or in the phone book and they won't be able to easily refer others to your company.
6. Is the name currently used elsewhere?
Doing a formal business name check can save you a lot of future hassles. Regulations vary depending upon your location, but if someone else is using the same business name, particularly if they are in a similar type of business or if they are doing business in the same area, you may be infringing on their rights. Always check with your lawyer if you have questions about using a particular name, and do ensure that you check for other uses before you commit to a particular business name.
