A recent report in the American Journal of Public Health linked chlorine to significant increases in certain types of cancer and stated that "up to 2/3s of the harmful exposure was due to skin absorption and inhalation while showering. Two decades after the start of chlorinating our drinking water the present epidemic of heart trouble and cancer began. A new statistical analysis indicates that people who drink chlorinated water run a 21 percent greater risk of bladder cancer and a 38 percent greater risk of rectal cancer than people who drink water with little or no chlorine. In the July AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH, the researchers suggest that at least 4,200 cases of bladder cancer and 6,500 cases of rectal cancer in the United States each year may trace to consumption of chlorinated water. Chlorine and its byproducts are now known causes of three of the most deadly types of cancer: bladder, rectal, and breast cancer.
