Chiropractics and Chiropractors

Chiropractics is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional medicine and accounts for about 200 million patients seeking treatment for back problems. Those who are interested in it will probably first want to take a look at the word chiropractics' origin. It is actually a combination of the Greek words cheir or hand and praxis or action. Taken together, it means "doing it by hand" and this is exactly what's behind the principles of chiropractics as an unconventional medical system that employs techniques for diagnosing, naming and treating medical conditions.

In essence, chiropractics is a health care approach that is anchored on how the structure of one's spine affects one's body. Practitioners will use their bare hands when doing a chiropractic procedure and will usually require sharp senses when it comes to distinguishing irregularities with the use of touch. If you think you're good and sensitive with your hands, you could actually be a chiropractor provided you undergo the necessary studies, exams and licensure.

Those who are serious about being chiropractors will begin their pursuit with a four-year academic program that will involve both classroom and clinical instruction. Before actually studying to be a chiropractor, a person should have finished at least three years of a course that is preparatory to chiropractics. Graduates will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Chiropractic and will now be on their way to taking the licensure exam which, if they pass, officially qualifies them for practice.

The practice of chiropractics actually depends on the individual state governments and most of these states would demand that even licensed chiropractors continue to expand their educational horizons by gaining credits to maintain the integrity of their licenses. Regulations on clinical practice also depend on the state where the chiropractor is located.

In some states, chiropractors can perform laboratory or diagnostic exams and procedures, prescribe dietary supplements and use homeopathy as a technique. In general, a chiropractor can only practice in the state where he obtained his license and will have to take another exam when he wishes to work in another state. For example, chiropractors in Chesterfield, Missouri may not practice in New Jersey unless they pass New Jersey's licensure exam for chiropractics. All practitioners, however, are not allowed to perform surgeries regardless of where they practice.

In St Louis backpain is a very common complaint that brings people to clinics operated by St Louis chiropractors. If you're in Missouri, there are many practitioners you can come to for help for your back or spinal woes.
