We have been involved in conflict for all of written recorded history from what we can tell. If history is any indicator of what will happen in the future, we can expect humans to be at war or engaged in conflict well into the future. There is only one problem with that, the weapons are getting so good, and humans are getting so good at killing each other, that this poses a huge problem.
Consider if you will that when humans were fighting with spears and knives, and rocks it was much harder for them to kill each other, it's a lot of effort, preparation, training, and humans didn't live all that long back then so the ages of that high testosterone were shorter and slow travel meant there would be fewer wars, less frequent. Back then there were also a lot less humans on the planet, so maybe it's a good thing they didn't have modern day weapons, because they could have easily wiped themselves out.
Today we have 7 billion people on the planet and growing, but the weapons of mass destruction including nuclear, biological, and chemical are completely lethal to large populations in countries. Even the weapons we have for conventional warfare which we would consider machine guns, tanks, planes, submarines, and ships are quite accurate and devastating. Consider if you will, the newest technologically with advanced anti-ship missiles.
Interesting Article in Defense Professional about India's new aircraft carrier, the article title was; "China's Anti-Ship Missiles May make India's 2012 Gorshkov Aircraft Carrier Unusable in War," and that really is an issue isn't it. If India goes to war with China, but also consider that China may get busy selling this missile to other nations such as Iran, Pakistan, North Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, etc.
If anti-ship missiles get in the hands of pirates in Somalia, terrorists, or rogue nations, and especially anti-ship missiles of that caliber, which China is making, this changes the dynamics of war, and makes things completely dangerous for soft targets. For instance, targets such as tanker ships carrying oil, what if they were to blow one up in the Suez Canal, the Panama Canal, or any other enclosed area? We already know that oil spills cause tremendous environmental and local economic damage.
But what if they block off choke points, places we need to move international shipping, trade, food supplies, and resources? Whereas, the United Nations is worried about chemical, biological, nuclear, and gas air weapons, as well as landmines and other things, maybe we need to add to the list these high-tech anti-ship missiles which can take out an aircraft carrier, a cruise ship, a ferry, an oil tanker, or a large cargo ship. That is serious business, and we should be thinking here.
