Chemical Depilatories - Hair Removal Made Effective?

Many people these days who desire to get rid of unwanted hair rely on chemical depilatories. Different types of chemical depilatories typically contain either the active ingredient calcium thioglycolate or barium sulfide. Compared to most other forms of hair removal depilatories are painless, and can last up to two weeks.

Common mediums for chemical depilatories include: gels, creams, lotions, aerosols, roll-ons, and powders.

Chemical depilatories work by targeting the protein structure of the hair, and causing it to dissolve. The hair and any residue left behind can then be simply washed away.

Before using any chemical products, it's recommended to test a small amount on the skin. Some people may be allergic to the chemicals or otherwise sensitive to them.

Depilatories should only be used for surfaces of the skin other than the face (unless face applications are specifically listed on the products label). Furthermore, directions on the product label should be followed carefully; if the chemical preparation is left on too long it may cause unnecessary irritation of the skin.

These products are inexpensive, especially in comparison to laser hair removal. The preparations come in a variety of different brands and also pertain to all different hair types (coarse/fine, blonde/dark and so on). They are easy to apply by yourself at home and completely pain free. In addition, the effects of chemical depilatories last much longer than that of shaving, because the hair is broken down to a shorter length.

The biggest drawback of these products is that it may trigger allergies or skin irritation in some people. They tend to have an unpleasant odor and can also be quite messy. Again, only certain products are recommended for facial use. So if that's an issue, be sure to read the product labels carefully.

Chemical depilatories can be purchased in most retail stores and drug stores.
