Often when you hear the word "cheap" you think of poor quality, mass produced, products. However it can sometimes simply mean affordable! When it comes to drums, while the shell pack and quality of the built is important, it is also just as equally and sometimes more important to use the right drum heads.
You can buy a drum kit for 3000 bucks that looks amazing, however if you skin it with crap drum heads or have never taken the time to learn how to tune drums properly it will sounds really bad! On the same note, you can buy a drum kit for 200-300 bucks, and skin it with some decent heads, learn to tune it right and you can have a set of cheap drums that sound like a 3000 bucks drum kit.
Choosing skins for the kit should be a personal decision, if you want some warmth with not too much resonance or overtone ringing after the strike you can go for coated skins, if you are after more attack you can try two ply un-coated skins, or if your looking for a bright high toned sound you can go for a single ply un-coated drum heads.. It is a good idea to go out and get an idea of the sound of different skins on a display kit in your local music store before you go buying a set of skins. What ever your decision make sure you spend the time to learn to tune them right, then you will have a cheap set that does not sound cheap.
