Changing Management - Keep a Positive Attitude to Make the Transition Easier

Expert Author Nezrul Hisyam Abdul Ghani

The first time I experienced major management change was during a merger and acquisition exercise. I was working with a local pharmaceutical company at that time and one giant international company was taking us over to strengthen their product portfolio. The whole process took almost two years and somehow, I believe that it has never completed.

The main challenge I immediately see when the merger plan was announce was adapting to the new work culture.

Our company was a small local company, made mainly from locals who are so used to domestic work ethic, and working for an international company definitely requires us to change most part of how we do business.

Maybe not 'change' but 'adjust'.

Young people like me, who is in my early 30's, find it not much of a problem to adjust, but I can see many of my seniors are struggling. Imagine someone who had been selling all his life suddenly finds himself having to learn selling from the basics.

Not only the basics of selling but the basic of product background as well.

But to be honest, what makes the transition smooth for me got nothing to do with my age. Some of my peers have problem adjusting to the change later during the transition.

The attitude makes the difference.

And my attitude springs from my belief that everything happen for a purpose, and it serve me. I believe that things are going to change for the better. Once I adopt this belief and I show it in every undertaking, my reaction is always positive.

Probably 'reaction' is not the best word to describe; 'respond' is better.

My positive respond is clearly visible when handling all the change that comes my way during the management transition. I find myself easily adjusting to the new job requirement, participating in training and mingling with new colleagues. It is probably easier to feel inferior when thinking that I come from a local company when I mingle with the new colleagues but I keep a positive attitude about it.

After all, they need us and not the other way around.
