Finding out that you have Type 2 diabetes can be pretty bad news. Maybe you have been ignoring it or struggling with it for some time and now you don't feel at all well. Imagine if you continue to let your weight spiral out of control for the next five years!
You may be telling yourself any number of excuses, but they will only lead to major complications and consequences. When you fail to make changes in your lifestyle, in your food choices, you are basically saying you would rather deal with the complications of Type 2 diabetes, rather than make the effort to change what and how you eat.
Have you made any of these excuses lately?
- I don't think eating the right foods will make a big difference
- eating the right foods will not give fast results
- blood sugar levels are reduced more quickly by taking diabetic medications
- I want to keep eating the foods I enjoy
- I don't have time to learn how to change my lifestyle
- healthy foods are boring and too expensive
- healthy foods don't taste as good as fast foods
- I'll just change one or two of my food choices
Many people know what healthy eating entails. However, many of us ignore what we know is in our best interest. Instead we eat too many processed foods, convenience foods, fast foods, greasy foods, rich foods and fattening foods. Add to those the sweet and salty foods whose flavors blind us to their nutritional shortcomings.
Processing robs food of it's nutrients and often adds sugar, white flour, fats and chemicals to give flavor. One of the theories there are so many overweight people is that people eat larger amounts of processed foods than they do unprocessed foods, thinking that processed foods contain many nutrients missing from unprocessed foods.
Also the typical eating style these days includes an unhealthy high percentage of fats, which leads many men and women to become overweight.
Changing your eating style is one of the challenges faced by people with Type 2 diabetes. An unhealthy eating style can be changed... bad habits can be broken, although it is not a quick process. It won't happen overnight... but you can improve.
A healthy eating style for the majority of people with Type 2 diabetes is similar to what is recommended for any one who chooses to eat healthily. Anyone who wants to avoid high blood pressure and heart attacks.
Type 2 diabetes cannot be cured but you can heal your body. You can lose weight and have lower blood sugar levels. So what should you eat? The answer is a balanced diet which consists of a mix of foods. The FDA's Food Pyramid gives these general recommendations:
- 6 or more servings of grains, beans and starchy vegetables
- 2 to 3 servings of milk products
- 2 to 3 servings of meat and other protein
- 3 to 5 servings of non-starchy vegetables
- 2 to 4 fruit servings
- limited amounts of fats, sweets and alcohol
Essentially a balanced meal contains all, or at least several of the key components listed above... carbs, protein, fiber and maybe a little fat.
Eating the right foods, letting go of excuses, will make a difference to your weight loss and blood sugar levels.
