Change Your Beauty Products As You Age

Expert Author Melissa Nathans

There are so many products on the market right now for aging skin - anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, anti-whatever - that we sometimes lose track of the fact that your skin starts to change well before you're thinking about using anti-aging products. From childhood to your teenage years, your skin probably made some dramatic changes, but it probably changed - or will change - again in your early twenties. One of the main things that causes these changes is your hormones, but your skin is also affected by environmental factors like sun exposure and by personal factors like stress. Since your skin changes through the years, it simply makes sense that you'll need to change your beauty products, too.

During your teenage years, your hormones are going nuts and trying to find their balance, which probably won't happen fully until your late teens or early twenties. Most teenagers struggle with acne and other skin problems. Instead of turning to the harshest of chemical solutions, though, you should focus on caring for your skin gently. Use a foaming cleanser if you have oily skin and a cream-based moisturizer if you have normal or dry skin. At this point, you probably will only need a light moisturizer, but be sure that you use sunscreen, too.

As you get into your early twenties, your skin may start to feel drier, and you may begin to get very fine lines around your eyes. Pay attention to the changes in your skin. Even if it was oily when you were a teenager, it's probably starting to get a bit drier now. You may need to experiment with different cleansers and moisturizers until you find the ones that suit you, and you may need to switch seasonally from less moisturizing options in summer to richer options in winter. At this point, you should be wearing sunscreen every day, and you may want to focus on getting a good, creamy moisturizer for your eye area.

After this point, your skin is probably just going to keep getting drier and losing its elasticity. If you've taken good care of your skin in your youth, you probably won't notice major wrinkles until your late thirties, although they'll start coming on slowly. When your skin starts to get super-dry - and especially as you get nearer to menopause - it's more important than ever that you use moisturizing products. Wrinkles are pretty much impossible to actually reverse, but if you take care of your skin as they start to come in, you may be able to prevent the worst damage for many years.
