But what really changed the way people thought about phones and applications was the decision by phone makers to open up the application market to individual developers. This happened after some hackers figured out how to run these third party applications on the iPhone and were selling them without the consent of Apple. Essentially, Apple surrendered and said we want a piece of the pie. They now allow developers to sell their own applications.

Flash forward and think about how huge this market actually is- millions of users buy millions of applications that each perform a unique, but significant function.
