Famous people such as celebrities, news anchors, authors, composers, etc. are all using Twitter to reach their fan base. With your applications on the phone, you could inform the whole world what you are doing and it's not a hard for you to post your personal updates.
In Twitter you can see if other people are "tweeting" about things that you are interested also. For instance, you have read something and you like it, you can choose to follow someone. This is comparable to Facebook of befriending someone.
It's like you choose who you want to connect for a reason. Facebook and Twitter are just the same in the sense that they both are social networks, the only difference between them is that they have different points of view. So with this information given, it's up to you then to choose which network you prefer. Or you can choose both.
