Remember when you first heard about car phones? They were the precursor to the cell phone and all the expensive cars came equipped with one. At the time that was the most amazing thing ever! Then slowly people started to get the big bag cell phones for their car. Those guys, and they were primarily men, were pretty popular and had car phone bragging rights. Then came the clunky cell phone and everyone suddenly had bragging rights that they had a cell phone. Of course not everyone got one right away as they were still pretty costly and the cellular companies didn’t have their networks all over, but it was the bragging rights that counted!

I can’t believe how much things have changed since then. Even in the deep country you can get cell phone coverage now. Little kids have their own cell phones (programmed with the parent’s phone numbers only) in cute colors that they can hang around their neck. Heck even my 88 year old grandma has her own cell phone! I think she might use it more than me too. Text messaging with cell phones is so common and used so much that commercials are even referencing the lingo. Don’t know what idk, bff, ttfn, lol mean? Look them up fast! Those without cell phones are in the vast minority these days and are quickly approaching the “weird, abnormal” rating that those without TVs are already have.

What makes cell phones so popular? I got my wife a cell phone originally for her safety. As a female she feels much more secure with instant access to 911 no matter where I am. You still need to use common sense and stay out of bad situations, such as walking at night, but just having a cell phone prevents crime. Don’t believe me? One of my close friends experienced the crime preventing nature of the cell phone a few years ago.

She was by herself making a Mary Kay delivery in broad daylight. As she left the client’s house she was dismayed to see a group of teenage boys hanging around just a few cars down from hers. She quickly walked to her car, got in and that’s when the guys surrounded her car and started to open the car door (she didn’t have power locking in the car). She couldn’t move as the car was surrounded so she pushed 1 and send (she had 911 set in memory for the number 1 on the phone pad). Right when she pulled that cell phone up to her face and yelled for help the entire group of guys split and ran off. She was very shaken, but completely unhurt. Cell phones frankly are a necessity for females.
