Seriously. The time for standard slow cardio is over. There is enough scientific proof out there right now that shows how ineffective traditional cardio really is.
So inefficient and ineffective in fact, that it can actually make you gain weight. That isn't why you choose to do cardio is it? I didn't think so...
But Honestly here. You can burn off too many calories with slow cardio and actually make yourself hungry. This causes you to eat when you are finished, negating most of your progress.
Eat enough and you WILL gain weight. So at best you have lost half of your workout. At worst your workout has led you to overeat and made you gain weight.
Wow, so who wants to do that? And that isn't even the only reason why cardio is bad for you.
Continue those long cardio sessions and you will subject yourself to over-use injuries. I actually made this mistake...
I had gained a bunch of weight after high school and started running to burn it off. I was sitting at 208.5 lbs (I'm 5'5") and I really messed up my knees doing this; I'm really lucky to have never needed surgery.
What you need to do (and what I learned to do after my injury) is focus on interval training. This is both more efficient and effective. And you only need to do three 20 minute sessions a week.
Let's say you ride a stationary bike (which is how I get my interval cardio in now).
You would ride for 20 minutes total. The first 5 would be a warm-up, and then the next 13 would consist of intervals. For instance you may do 6 intervals where you ride at a "faster than normal pace" for 30 seconds and then do an "active rest" period for 45 seconds.
At the end you would have a 3 minute cool down.
This is all the cardio you need, just repeat this 3 times a week. It is more effective than riding for 5 days a week at 60 minutes each day. Add to this a resistance training program and you will shed the fat. Now there are literally hundreds, perhaps thousands of programs to choose from.
Just know that not all weight lifting programs are created equal...
