Can I Change My Mind Set?

We are constantly being told that we must change our mindset if we are to succeed and take advantage of these difficult times. The current times themselves seem to enhance our negative attitudes towards change. So can we change our current mindsets?

So what is a mindset?

Our mindset is how we react to certain stimuli, especially change. It is governed by learned and often deep routed feelings within our subconscious memory which may inhibit or enhance our reactions, especially to change.

All our mindsets are formed from a very young age and implanted in our sub conscious. If they are so deeply buried, can they be changed?

The answer to this is Yes.

Mindset is formed by and reinforced by habit. The habit is that of stimulus and reward. It does not matter if the reward is good or bad. The subconscious does not discriminate, only our higher senses discriminate. So we have to find ways to use our higher senses to change our subconscious mind set. Sounds confusing but it is not really it just takes a little time and a little gentle focus.

We have to develop habits that give the subconscious mind a better feeling. Mindset is all about feelings it is not about logic. Once you understand this you become empowered to change the feelings. Mindset is a set of feelings that happen when we face certain situations.

OK, simple, so how do we change the feeling?

First we must recognize the feelings we have. Does change give a comfortable feeling of challenge. Does what we already have give a feeling of comfort and stability. If this is the case there is probably no need to change your mind set. If on the other had change gives a feeling of fear and we are uncomfortable with what we already have it is probably time to change our mind set.

Now, feelings of discomfort and fear, and failure are what we would call negative or inhibitory feelings. Those of comfort and success are positive. Fortunately to changing feelings is not that difficult but does take some time and perseverance.

Managing the change.

Remember none of this can happen overnight. First set your goal. What is it you really want to achieve. Make your goal very specific. It is no good just saying I want money. Make it a specific amount of money that you can visualize. It may be a particular car or a particular house. You must be able to see it though in your mind's eye.

OK, having visualized your goal now hold that image in your mind and FEEL what it is like to have that thing. Hold onto that feeling. Each time you get negative feelings, gently move your mind into the positive feeling. Do not do battle with negative feelings, treat it like martial arts, wait until it dies down a little and then slip in the positive.

There are some very good relaxing videos and audio discs on the market which help you to relax and generate positive feelings, use them.

The change will take time but habit springs eternal. Habit formed your original mindset and habit will change it.

I trained initially as an Osteopath with a particular interest in children's development. This lead me to train also as an analyst and then onto research into physical and emotional development. The culmination of all this was developing the Emotio-Somatic method of emotional release.

I strongly believe that the difficulties most people face, especially in starting a new business are due to inhibitory learned subconscious feelings towards a positive change. We can achieve anything we want so long as we are able to face our own gremlins.
