Hydration packs were initially provided to soldiers as way to carry their own water. No longer do they have to carry the clunky canteens you see in old WWII movies. Today the same concept has been introduced to the sporting enthusiasts that run, bike, hike or the weekend warrior who just wants to walk around the zoo and have easy access to water.
Of course there are several designs that allow you to carry various amounts of water with you during your run, walk or trail bike expedition. Some of the important aspects when considering a hydration pack are; size, shape and comfort. Some packs are designed to fit around your waist, while others are designed to ride across your back.
The difference between a hydration pack for the waist or back really comes down to the individual's preference around comfort and accessibility. Most packs hold from 1-2 liters of water. Waist packs hang at a lower center of gravity and can be more comfortable during a run. You can also store other items in the various compartments like keys, wallets and other water filled reservoirs.
Manufacturers know that comfort is a key decision maker when choosing a product and spend a great deal of time developing to that requirement. The backpack version has a contour shape designed to fit snugly across the back with easily accessible straps that can be tightened for maximum comfort. This helps prevent shifting up and down during a run or distraction when hitting the moguls during your ski run down the slopes.
All in all, whether you choose a hydration pack or one that fits across your back, you will stay hydrated better during your sporting activities.
