Buying a Franchise - Things to Consider When Evaluating a Home Based Franchise Opportunity

Expert Author Greg Preite

Buying a franchise involves some very diligent research and investigation. Although data shows that the success rate of a new business owner is higher if they begin as a franchisee rather than starting a new business from scratch, the major decision that the new franchisee must make is what business in which to invest. It is critical that before buying a franchise, the prospective owner must ask some very poignant questions and have a solid knowledge of the franchising process.

The process itself evolves from the company experiencing success on a small scale first and then increasing this to profitability with opening the first 10-25 units over a larger geographical area. Once this occurs, then they begin to branch out into the next stage of development. A potential franchisee should thoroughly investigate the history of the franchise. Take the time to ask questions and find out what stage of expansion the parent company is currently experiencing. Specifically, has the franchise survived the initial 10-25 units? If so, the prospective franchisee should continue the process of investigation. I would recommend against buying a franchise without this level of success.

However, once past the initial 25 units, the company should have built a solid infrastructure that will provide a substantial level of support for you to operate your franchise. This will offer you a better chance of success. With franchises at this level, you will have a better chance for success.

Now that you have narrowed down your choices with regards to the specific industry and company it is very imperative for you to talk to other franchisees within the organizations. Look to speak with franchisees that have been in operation for at least a year. Ask them very specific questions regarding costs, financial goals, unexpected problems, challenges, and successes. Inquire to find out if they feel they have been supported adequately by the parent company. Ask if they would change anything if they were given the opportunity. If you discovered that the franchisees have been pleased with the level of communication provided by the franchisor, then your investigative work should continue. However, if communications with the parent company are a challenge, then this should serve as a huge warning sign and you should probably avoid buying a franchise who's franchisees have this complaint. Good communication is a sign that the franchisor is focused on future growth and success.

Do not forget to interview the franchisor personally and to also speak directly with the franchisor's support personnel. Remember, these are many of the people that you will be relying on for support and training so you must be comfortable with their method of communication as well as their accessibility to answer questions. Describe some specific scenarios and find out how they typically handle these situations.

Buying a franchise can be an exciting proposition but remember, you will more than likely be putting a large portion of your financial future at risk when doing so. You want to make sure that you are headed in the right direction and that you are giving yourself the best opportunity to succeed. I would also recommend, before buying a franchise, that you fully investigate other home based options such as an online business where the investment is much lower and, with the right partners, the chances of success and profitability may be equal or even exceed that of a home based or low cost franchise.
