I am sure Joseph Bulova, a young immigrant from Bohemia, had no idea his little jewelry store in New York City would evolve into one of the world's best known and renowned watch companies: the Bulova Watch Company. Bulova watches can be found in stores around the world. How many watch companies have evolved from making simple pocket watch in the early 1900's to landing on the moon in the 1960's? How many watches adorned the wrists of General Omar Bradley, Charles Lindbergh and Lyndon Johnson?
The reputation of Bulova watches is renowned around the globe. From its exquisite craftsmanship to its unsurpassed time keeping accuracy (1/1000 of a second), these watch styles range from simple, everyday models to embellished gold and silver creations that rival any fine jewelry. Whether shopping in a big box store or a classy jewelry store on Rodeo Drive, you will find a style and price tag that meets your needs.
With 130 years of making fine timekeeping instruments, the craftsmen at Bulova have taken their craft to a new level. They have melded their engineering innovations with cultural changes to create a slate of options for anyone's budget, lifestyle or taste. Over the last century, the Bulova Watch company has moved from simple timekeeping pieces used in the fox holes of World War I to exquisitely detailed pieces of jeweled art.
During their history, the company has changed how we keep track of time. One example of that change was the introduction of the Accutron watch line. Introduced in the 1960's, the Accutron is the first watch to run on electric batteries, rather than springs which would frequently break. This is one of the most dynamic changes in timekeeping history. So excited was President Lyndon Johnson with this amazing new watch that he presented it to all his visiting dignitaries from around the globe.
Not only was President Johnson impressed with this new precision timekeeping piece, but General Omar Bradley was presented with one. Railroad personnel wore the Accutron models for many years as they were the only 'certified' timekeeping instruments allowed. But most impressive was the fact the Accutron mechanisms were used in 46 space mission and was the only clock allowed on Air Force One.
For the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, Bulova provided the equipment that would be left behind to transmit data from the Sea of Tranquility. This equipment continued to send data to our NASA scientists for several years to come. It is hard to know how much knowledge we have gleaned from this data.
In 1968, a public clock that would run on orbiting satellite signals was installed in Mexico. The Mexican President installed this magnificent time piece on the roof of the Torre Latino Americana, a tall Mexican office building. The clock continued to demonstrate its outstanding accuracy.
