There are times when getting a speeding ticket or traffic violation that it's necessary to fight the ticket in court. You may not have points to spare before losing your license, you may be innocent, or you may not be able to afford the fines.
Building a speeding ticket defense will help you avoid having to pay for that ticket. But this defense isn't something that starts after you have the ticket and are getting ready for court. The defense starts as soon as you are pulled over. Anything that you say could be used against you in court, so you should be careful with what word choice you use.
Many times after rolling down your window and the cop approaches you, the question is asked, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" If you answer this question with something like, "Because I was speeding," it's most certainly you will get a ticket and it's guaranteed that you will lose in court because this is an admission of guilt. If the officer asks politely decline to answer or ask a question yourself about why the officer pulled you over.
Sometimes people will say something along the lines of, "I'm sorry officer but I'm late for a meeting." Now this isn't an admission of guilt, but the cop could say in court that he or she believed you were going too fast because you were running late. It is easy to assume the judge will think that being late and speeding go together, so you could lose your defense.
It's also best to not argue with the officer about your speed. Two bad things can happen when you do this. One is that you may be threatened about driving a vehicle that unsafe for roads if the officer assumes your speedometer is broken or inaccurate. The second issue about arguing your speed is that you can make the officer angry or unsettled. There is still a chance you might get off with a warning if you are polite. Also in court if you were rude or in an argument, the officer will remember how rude you were and be sure to show up to make sure you don't get out of the ticket.
In order to build a better speeding ticket defense be sure to be aware that it all starts out as soon as you are pulled over.
