When you build a strong personal foundation you will accomplish more. I see building a strong foundation as a life long endeavor.
One of my hobbies is cooking and I am drawn to cookbooks. The other day I found an old cookbook when my husband and I were going through old family boxes. I immediately began paging through it and found surprisingly little of interest. That was until I came to the section of Notes at the end of the book. This is where I learned about the 20 minute-a-day plan.
"Every day set aside 20 minutes and exactly 20 minutes; no more, no less. Do one task. Clean one drawer, wash one shelf, polish silver. weed the garden, sew on a button or wash one window. Never deviate--take only 20 minutes and then stop until the next day. Tackle one job at a time."
I decided to put this plan into action. There are many tasks that I do not get to because I think I do not have enough time. I am thrilled to say that I have been amazed how easy and effective this plan is. The first week I did a 20 minute task every day in the kitchen. The first day I cleaned the refrigerator, then I began on drawers, moving on to the pantry shelves. I set a kitchen timer and stopped exactly after 20 minutes. If I wasn't done with a particular task I knew I would finish it the next day. For me it has been a great way to get tasks done that I had not gotten to for a long time. Since then I have moved on to closets and drawers in other parts of the house.
What I like about the 20 minute a day plan is that it is so doable. Today I spoke with a woman who finds herself overwhelmed with worry that she may lose her job. She says she is still doing her job well but outside of work she hardly gets anything accomplished. I told her about the 20 minute a day plan and she decided to walk 20 minutes a day whether she felt like it or not. Hopefully this action will be a stepping stone to regaining energy in order to come up with solutions. When we strengthen our personal foundation dealing with what life throws at us becomes much easier.
