Electronic newsletters are a powerful and inexpensive way to stay in touch with customers, build your brand and increase market reach. Yet many companies launch a newsletter and fail miserably after a few issues because they don't know what to write. Here are several ideas to help you keep your newsletter filled with articles customers want to read.
- Customer profiles. Think about customers you have helped recently. Perhaps you were able to overcome a major obstacle or deliver a product or service in a very short time. Consider the problem and your solution and how this can relate to other customers. Showcasing your work in this way is the best type of testimonial you can have.
- Questions from customers. If one customer is asking a question about your product or service, chances are others want that information as well. Generalize your answer so it applies to many situations.
- Product advances. Has your product or service changed recently? Let customers know why these changes are important to them. Stress customer benefits not product features. Ask yourself, "Why is this change important to my customer?"
- Presentations. When you make a presentation, review your notes for material you can reuse in your newsletter. Think of major topics you covered and use these chunks of information to form an article. You may be able to write a few articles from one presentation.
- National news. Is national news affecting your industry or your customers? Offer your perspective. Not only does this help your client, but it also builds your reputation as an expert in your field.
- Local news. Look to your local area for inspiration as well. Make a connection between a local event and your product or service. For example, if there is a drought, a garden shop could offer tips on growing plants under dry conditions.
- Industry trends. What news from your industry would be of interest to your readers? Will recently passed legislation affect your customers? Are there new standards that will affect products? Think outside the box.
Don't wait until it's time to write a newsletter article to start thinking about topics. Get into the habit of finding ideas before you need them and collect them in a file for later use. You will be glad that you did when you are facing a deadline!
